Two-Wave Mixing Demodulator for Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors

Fiber optic sensors are an increasingly important emerging technology for Intelligent Structural Health Management systems. Fiber sensor network costs are relatively low, and large distributed sensor networks are possible using multiplexing techniques. We are configuring adaptive FBG networks using a novel multiplexed photorefractive two-wave mixing (TWM) demodulation scheme. Unlike extant scanned FBG demodulation systems, the TWM system can simultaneously measure high-frequency signals from multiple vibration, impact or acoustic emission sensors. The system is unaffected by quasi-static strains, and environmental effects such as temperature drift.
